In wintertime, when it's freezing cold, the time comes to follow the forest path for picking the wood that needs to be cut. After it is torn down and all the branches are cleared out, it's rolled down the chute towards the waggon load.
As it is supposed to be, the wood is left for drying or it's taken to a sawmill where it's turned into timber.
Only the perfectly dried wood is suitable for traditional craftswork. Left under a shed, for drying, timber is processed after one or two years.
Scattered around Bucovina there are still local craftsmen who know how to bring the wood to life by chopping it or by creating a traditional instrument.
Wood seems to sing in the hands of craftsmen.
On the Vaser Valley, the last "Mocăniță" train in our country chugs along heavily, at a maximum speed of 20 km/h, covering about 40 kilometers. In this valley, where the only access is provided by the old steam engine that sprinkles sand on the tracks and gains momentum on a slope with just a few degrees of inclination, forestry workers travel most of the time, along with the occasional group of tourists eager for a unique experience.
It's a trip as romantic as can be when viewed from a passenger car, but utterly practical for the mechanic, conductor, brakeman, or car handler. Just when you're enjoying the journey, bam! A wheel bearing breaks, or an empty cart derails. Calmly, the crew disembarks from the "G" service car with a jack, crowbars, and a replacement bearing, and within half an hour, everything is back on track—literally!
In general, everyone washes their dirty laundry in the family, which is hygienic for society. But most of the time they dry them out so, not having to go under the "dirty" underneath, I preferred to illustrate the clean part. It's a GDPR thing after all :) :)
